About Me (Ashley Caples LMFT)

Why are you a therapist? Excellent question. Let’s talk.

Since I was about 9 years old I knew exactly what I wanted to do when I grew up.

Be a lawyer. In fact, I was so sure of this decision I majored in political science initially in college before adding a double major in psychology. It was around the spring of 2011 when my advisor reminded me for the hundredth time that I still had to pick a minor. I really felt like I selected psychology because I could knock out over half of the minor requirements in one semester. Some of the classes sounded fairly interesting too including a course called Intro to Counseling. We’ll call the professor that taught this course Dr.M and he was by far the best professor I ever had. He told us stories about his time in private practice and used these to teach the basics of therapy and counseling.

Perhaps the most memorable story was what to do if you’re ever subpoenaed. He called this “the story of how I got my giant television.” He was called in to answer questions about his notes for a couple going through divorce. I learned the importance of keeping your notes discreet to protect your clients and that there was a good chance I’d experience this at some point my career. At the end of that particular class, I just kept thinking, “how could someone subpoena a therapist to make a spouse look bad during divorce proceedings?”

And then it hit me. I would be that person if I stuck to my lawyer dream.

So I added a double major that semester while finishing the couple courses I still needed for my political science major. I will be forever grateful that I ended up in that Intro to Counseling course that ended up changing the entire trajectory of my life.
