What’s In a Name?

Daylight Therapy was not originally going to be the name of my practice. For years I was between The Spark Center or Caples Counseling. The spark originated from Taylor Swift’s song Sparks Fly but not just that. A client doesn’t need a roaring flame of passion and motivation to get better…they just need a spark. Caples Counseling hopefully speaks for itself.

Apparently, there are dozens of therapy practices throughout the country named with some variation of “spark.” I abandoned this days before I registered my LLC but I was scrambling to come up with a name that felt right. I scrolled through Taylor Swift’s albums looking for inspiration when I finally came to the final track from Lover. Lyrics from this particular song are framed in my hallway right when you walk into my home.

“And I can still see it all in my head,

back and forth from New York sneaking in your bed,

I once believed love would be burning red,

but it’s golden.

Like daylight.”

But the lyrics that fit the practice best were “You gotta step into the daylight and let it go.” And a theme was born. Soon after, I got really into Noah Kahan and listened to his song Call Your Mom over and over. “Don’t let this darkness fool you, all lights turned off can be turned on.” This seemed to take the concept a step further than Taylor Swift’s song did.

Oh but the quote that truly set us over the top comes from Brandon Sanderson.

"It won't be like that for me," Kaladin said. "You told me it would get worse." "It will," Wit said, "but then it will get better. Then it will get worse again. Then better. This is life, and I will not lie by saying every day will be sunshine. But there will be sunshine again, and that is a different thing to say. That is truth. I promise you, Kaladin: You will be warm again."

I have all three of these quotes framed in our office and I see them every time I lead a client back to my office. Now I like to think that the lengthy journey here was my spark that helped me arrive into the daylight.
