(Re-)Introducing Daylight Therapy
Hi! I’m Ashley. I’ve wanted to sit down and do this for months now but when running a practice while maintaining a full caseload it doesn’t allow for much free time. Daylight Therapy was a dream of mine for at least 10 years before I was finally in a place to make it happen. Through undergrad, grad school, supervision, and the licensure process (more on all of these in another post) I don’t think I really believed it would ever happen though.
Daylight Therapy was born from the idea of inclusion. Throughout grad school, I recall a frequent topic of conversation coming up. “What do you do if a client whose beliefs don’t align with yours wants to see you for therapy?” The frequent example of this “client” was anyone that was a part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Shockingly, the vast majority of my classmates stated they would unflinchingly refer them out and not meet with them. I attended a Christian university and looking back, this wasn’t really the best fit for me and what I wanted to do.
After moving to Daphne, AL to start a new chapter of my life with my now husband it was nearly impossible to find a private practice that didn’t advertise a specialization in Christian counseling. This is great for many people, probably even the majority of people in our area but this was not a one size fits all option. Throughout my internships and my first job as a therapist I encountered everyone. Looking at these incredible people sitting across from me, I couldn’t help but think…if I had agreed with my classmates, I never would’ve had the privilege to work with so many wonderful clients.
And so, Daylight Therapy was soon born. I wanted a place that said “you belong here” no matter who you are, who you love, or your religious beliefs. Daylight has been my greatest accomplishment, my biggest source of anxiety, and the thing I will always be most proud of.
I’d love to have the chance to meet you or introduce you to one of my brilliant colleagues if you’re ready to talk to someone. We’ll be here.
